STARS and PLANETS , VIEWPOINTS and The FLATNESS and Vastness OF SPACE
It all changes with the viewpoint , birdie
To see stars caught in trees is a First Person view from the eye
But to a conjectural Third Person Narrator , the Universe tends towards spinning and flatness
and if this doesn’t seem to be so then it may be we’re looking at whatever it is sideways on
Or of course at an angle.
From the viewpoint of Earth , which is under our feet , the Sun , Moon and planets pass over our heads on a track in the sky which is called the ecliptic because that is where the eclipses take place - like car crashes in Space - as they travel along the same line in the sky .from where we are standing , a predictable eliptical tracing
hard etched on the Solar System’s flat plate
Or more or less flat - give or take a few degrees - but ninety degrees to the Sun's axis is base
and we are tilted at twenty three degrees from it which is why we have seasons and why this is May
and it's up in the sky as we look at it sideways
Out from the Earth and up and away
the highway of planets and moon as they keep to the track of the sun
And it’s a track because it’s sideways on - seen from our location on the disc-- because the disc includes what we are standing on
The sun is our star - but it's all in the Milky Way Galaxy , a drop in its ocean of stars
Called after the ribbon of glimmer that goes over our sky like an archway of milk or of paint
And the Mythical Way is a pathway to Heaven before there were streetlights to drown it
And it looks like a streak as we’re seeing it sideways
And it’s a track because it’s sideways on - seen from our location on the disc - because the disc includes what we are standing on
And we thought that these stars in numbers like sand on a beach - unimaginably large - was the end of it
Until one day a comet hunter noticed that some faint and distant stars
were strangely misty round the edges
And somehow realised that these flecks of Space debris
that he could pick out with his wide lensed
Telescope , were not stars at all but galaxies
Mostly flat and spinning too
- Sand beaches , rather like our own
Does it go on and on ?
And so
- are we alone ?
In this unimaginable vastness
Unimaginable to the power of Unimaginable size
It’s that the question just hangs in the air . Over every thing
Over every thought
And over every word
And polished like a shining stone
Under a tree
And in the chamber of a bower bird
